Rotary "Making a difference"

As part of their major International Service Project, Ginninderra Rotary Club (Area 4) has offset some travel costs and expenses, for Gerald Ocharo who has finally departed to take up his residential scholarship in Italy at the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio.

Gerald is the first university graduate from the slums of Kibera in Nairobi Kenya - sponsored through secondary and tertiary education by Oasis Africa Australia and Rotary. "With our thanks to Rotary’s support to date – you have literally been instrumental in changing an individual’s destiny."

Letter of thanks from Gerald Ocharo

My gratitude to Oasis Africa

“Be the reason someone smiles. Be the reason someone feels loved and believes in the goodness in people.” a quote by Roy Bennette is what I have always felt. I have been smiling, feeling loved and believing in the goodness of people since the day I became part of the Oasis Africa family. The journey for my life was a puzzle for me that required a key to solve, and finding that key was a rough path that seemed impossible. For years living in poverty with no education felt like I was in an abyss filled with darkness yearning to see the light. With several attempts to come out of the darkness, it kept weighing me down until the day Oasis Africa came and stretched a helpful hand towards me and pulled me out of the abyss. Oasis Africa showed me a path and shed light and happiness in my life.

I received an education and graduated with first-class honour. Since graduation, which just happened a month before the covid pandemic, life changed for many of us, but I used the analytic and writing skills, which I obtained from my economic class, to survive despite the difficulties of getting employment. I have been an analyst and academic writer since graduation and, this year, I won a scholarship to study in Italy for a master degree. The path is getting brighter and, this is all because of the Oasis Africa family.

I am grateful to all my donors for their great work and for investing in me for my success. Now, I am being valued and respected in society, am no longer a useless person anymore, thanks to you. Thank you for transforming my life, making me smile, and building me into the person I am today. Also, I am grateful for the continued support you are giving me during this journey to Italy. Be blessed for me and the lives you are changing in this our society, forever grateful. Thank you, Oasis Africa,
