Rotary Australia World Community Service Ltd. (RAWCS) was formed to enable Australian Rotarians, Rotary Districts and Rotary Clubs to assist communities and individuals through humanitarian aid projects. In our Community Group we have three RAWCS projects currently operating. One of these is the Eyes for Africa project established by the Rotary Club of Milton-Ulladulla.
The Rotary Club of Milton-Ulladulla has a RAWCS project started in 2011-12. It is called Eyes for Africa: Ethiopia and aims to provide free eye sight restoring cataract surgery to poor Ethiopians in remote rural areas. Clinical services are provided by Australian ophthalmic health professional volunteers with local clinical staff. The project has already restored sight to over 4,000 people. |
In 2024 the Eyes For Africa project established and equipped an Eye Clinic at the Meki Hospital in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia, also employing an ophalmic nurse. This service is supported by the Eyes For Africa Foundation funds and with regular visits from Australian volunteer surgeons and ophthalmic clinicians. The Clinic provides ongoing access to primary eye care to more than 60,000 Ethiopians. It can provide precriptions for refractive glasses, perform small operations such as excision of chalazions and tarsal plate rotation surgery on patients who have suffered with trachoma, and removal of corneal foreign bodies and many other tasks. |
