The Combined Rotary Clubs of Wagga Wagga continue to recognise the anniversary of the day Wagga Wagga became Rotary’s Frist Peace City by holding a Peace Day Ceremony on the Sunday closest to 23 February.
Organised by Kooringal Rotary, this year’s ceremony was held in the Victory Memorial Gardens before a crowd of about 125 Rotarians, guests and members of the public.
A Welcome to Country was provided by Aunty Isabel Reid while the Civic Welcome was given by Councillor Kerry Pascoe. Federal Member for Riverina, Michael McCormack read the Declaration of Peace. The Credo of the Peace Communities Program was read by PDG Ray King who asked those present to make the promise with him. Everyone then read the Prayer of St Francis. Presentation of School Awards by Member for Wagga Wagga Daryl Maguire followed. Each of the local secondary schools gave short oral presentation informing the crowd what community service was being carried out in their schools locally and globally.
Then the Wagga Wagga City Council Peace Award was presented to the nominee selected by Council. Each of the Rotary clubs then presented an award for community service to their nominees.
To conclude, the prestigious Helen and Peter Walsh Memorial Peace Community Award was presented by District Governor.
