Rotary 100 Peace Pole Project
The Centenary of Rotary in Australia is fast approaching. The 21st April 2021 is the date when the first Club opened in Melbourne 100 years ago. The Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin is on a mission to see 100 Peace Poles donated by Rotary Club’s to 100 schools around Australia to celebrate this milestone. The project had been running along nicely until interrupted by COVID-19.
Previously in order to qualify for one of the Peace Poles the schools first were required to visit the Canberra Rotary Peace Bell. This was to connect the Peace Pole to the Peace Bell. That requirement has been removed so Club’s can now simply follow a four-step process in order to see a Peace Pole planted in a school nearby.
Step 1. Identify the school or schools that you wish to donate a Peace Pole to.
Step 2. In conjunction with the school select the languages that are to be shown on the Peace Pole. Naturally English will be one language, an indigenous language can be featured plus other languages suitable to the school and area.
Step 3. Take delivery and plant the Peace Pole at the school. All poles are now aluminium and cost $150 + GST and freight from Geelong VIC.  Allow $75-$80 for freight.
Step 4. Encourage the school to join with the other schools that have received Peace Poles to conduct a ceremony to recognise World Peace Day on the third Tuesday in September each year. Send a member of your club to the school on the day to read the message of Peace from the Secretary General of the United Nations.
This project sets up an ongoing relationship between the club’s and the school’s plus sends a most valuable message of peace to all students and staff of the school.
