In receiving the award Stefanie acknowledged the great contribution her staff has made to the local community. While at the mine, Parkes Rotarians Ken Engsmyr (secretary) Rex Veal (President) and David Hughes (Assistant Governor) also gave a short presentation to the executive staff about a recent Rotary visit to Fiji.

 

Some months ago North Parkes Mines donated superseded computers to Parkes Rotary Club. Some were distributed to needy organisations in Parkes and Forbes and the rest went to Fiji. Ken Engsmyr went to Fiji at his own expense to supervise the installation of these computers in a school in a remote part of the main island. For security reasons the computers had been totally stripped of software so they all needed to be re furbished and this was successfully done. Three computers were also installed in the Rotahomes village near Nandi. All of the costs of transport, software, the technician that went with Ken were paid by Rotary.

 

Unbelievably Fijian Customs charged them duty on the computers and also the medical equipment in the same container which had also been donated. These computers will be an absolute godsend to the students who in normal circumstances could not even afford to buy a cheap thumb drive. With access to the internet a whole new world will be open to them thanks to the cooperation between North Parkes Mines and The Rotary Club of Parkes.
